Cyberbullying

Something that is happening now, cyberbullying. A difficult topic but very important!

Something that happens to the kids, but is also common with grown ups nowadays, online bullying. What is this?

Cyberbullying is bullying that takes place using electronic technology. Examples of cyberbullying include mean text messages or emails, rumors sent by email or posted on social networking sites, and embarrassing pictures, videos, websites, or fake profiles.

You read about it continuously, photos and phrases are spreaded to downgrade somebody. Deliberately hurting other people’s feelings. But it also happens the other way around, when people enthusiastically post a photo and negative comments follow. It’s fine to share your opinion of course, but this goes beyond an opinion. Like when this happend to me during the ‘short gate‘. Wearing a fake leather short and tights was the reason to tell me I looked like a pig including the oink oink. Seriously people? This was a one time thing for me, but there are lots of people in the world who experience this regularely. The famous Tess Holliday gets her share of negativity daily on her photos. Especially on her Instagram account you can read loads of positive, inspired comments but also lots of negative ones. Again, sharing your opinion is okay but why do you have to be insulting? Last week Tess posted this on her account:

It’s important that we are aware of this. Why do we think we have the right to publicly humiliate people? Oh I know “you shouldn’t be on tv or spreading your photos online”. Like that is a reason to offend people? In the end we are all human beings with feelings. Think before you write down something! Luckily there are also people who can write their opinion and be respectful about it. Of course you don’t have to agree with everybody, that would be boring. But when your opinion is negative, try to bring it in a respectful manner or write nothing at all.

cyberpesten

This quote says it all. Very selfish I can say that I am happy that I didn’t grow up with social media. I think the kids have a hard time nowadays. It’s not name calling or spreading rumors anymore, it’s a lot bigger including photos, videos and group text spreading like a disease. I read lots of stories of people being bullied because of the way they look. How is your experience with this?
